SCIS Launches 2010 Chicago Marathon Fundraising Effort
There's still time to join SCIS for the 2010 Chicago Marathon...
It's not too late if you are already registered for the race.
Why run for SCIS at the 2010 Chicago Marathon?
- Run for those that cannot. Raise money for the estimated 4 million people afflicted with paralysis: people that can only fantasize about moment of physical freedom, let alone a marathon.
- Cut the red tape. Raising money for SCIS ensures that the dollars donated by your friends, family and coworkers in this difficult economic environment have the most impact. SCIS runs lean and mean, just like you.
- Expert marathon tips and training. Our Conditioning Coach is an accomplished marathoner (and Iron Man!) who organizes training programs and group runs throughout the Chicago summer. He is also an invaluable resource for all types of marathon-related inquiries including diet, training and injury care/prevention.
- Awesome SCIS race gear for the big day. Unlike other charities, we provide high-quality, sleek racing gear for the big day. We want you to look, and perform, your best!
- SCIS Post Race Party. Invite your friends, family and donors to celebrate your big accomplishment at the best Sunday afternoon charity post-race party in Chicago, overlooking the course from a 43-story River North roof deck!
- Something special. 7 athletes in 2008, 13 in athletes in 2009, 43 and counting for 2010. We're growing fast and for good reason. Read the inspiring personal stories behind the squad for this year:

A little about our organization…
SCIS was established in May 2008, just 14 months after our founder, Geoff Kent, was paralyzed from the ribcage down in a skiing accident. The purpose of our organization is two-fold, 1) to be a resource for accurate information on how life after an SCI often times just sucks, and 2) to raise money and to put it into the hands of the most cutting edge researchers. We started very much as a grassroots organization, here are a couple facts that we are proud of:
- SCIS has no paid employees. Around 99% of all funds that are raised end up going toward actual researchers.
- SCIS hand picks the research that we choose to fund. Geoff travels around the U.S. to establish personal relationships with the doctors on the frontier of spinal cord research, and this ensures that our funds go towards only the most cutting-edge, promising projects.
- Your donation is SIGNIFICANT. SCIS has raised around $110,000 in our first two marathons, but just how much money is this? Our check, presented at the Working 2 Walk conference in Chicago, represented 5% of Dr. Davis annual budget. The money moves the needle.
