Reason for SCIS:
A couple of years ago, my friend Caitlin ran the marathon with SCIS and I was very impressed by the organization's realistic tone and commitment to Spinal Cord Injury Research. My Dad is a clinical psychologist who does rehabilitation with patients who have suffered spinal cord injuries and I have grown up hearing their stories of perseverance and struggle. This past November, my friend James was traveling with his family in Guam. While on a hike, James's Dad George suffered a severe spinal cord injury. After being transported home to California, George fought for many months to stay alive. On June 3, 2011, surrounded by family and friends who love him dearly, George passed away. I'm running my first marathon in memory of George Santos Servino and in honor of my Dad's many patients who continue to fight everyday.
